Obaku School of Buddhism
The Obaku School of Zen, the third school of Zen Buddhism following the Rinzai and Soto schools, was founded in the early Edo period by Ingen Ryuki (1592-1673), a Chinese Buddhist monk. Ingen went to Kofukuji Temple in Nagasaki in 1654 by invitation from the Tokugawa Shogunate after which he established the Obaku head temple, Manpuku-ji Temple, in Uji, Kyoto in 1661. The Obaku teachings, rooted in the teachings of Rinzai, were adopted by the Tokugawa Shogunate and local daimyo (feudal lords) and were said to have brought new perspective into Japanese society and culture.
